Securing reliable drinking water for Al Muthanna communities
A sustainable drinking water infrastructure for the districts of Al Khidr and Al Daraji will provide a reliable water supply for around 160,000 people.
The rising salinity of the Euphrates and outdated water treatment plants mean that the water quality meets neither WHO nor Iraqi standards. As a result, many households rely on drinking water from private provider, which places a particular burden on low-income families.

To address these challenges, a new drinking water supply system is being developed for the Iraqi Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities (MoCHPM), financed by KfW Development Bank on behalf of the German Government. It comprises a modern water treatment plant, reservoirs, pumping stations and an expanded distribution network. Dorsch Impact and ECG are responsible for engineering design, construction supervision, environmental and social management and capacity building for the Al Muthanna Water Directorate, laying the foundation for a reliable, affordable and sustainable supply.

- Planning and detailed design of the new water treatment plant, reservoirs, pumping stations and distribution networks

- Tendering, procurement and contract management according to KfW guidelines and FIDIC
- Construction supervision, including the 12-month defect notification period and O&M support for the treatment plant

- Capacity building for the Al Muthanna Water Directorate: operation & maintenance, tariff roadmap, public awareness and gender equity
